Aristolochia ferox, a new species of subg. Siphisia (Aristolochiaceae) from Guangxi, China

PhytoKeys 273: 171-183

DOI: 10.3897/phytokeys.273.169468

Authors: Yifan Wang, Shuai Liao, Sven Landrein, Khang Sinh Nguyen, Joyce G. Onyenedum, Zirui Guo

Abstract: Aristolochia ferox is described as a new species endemic to the Jiuwanshan Mountains, northern Guangxi, China. It is morphologically similar to A. championii, A. quangbinhensis, I. haimingii and A. fangchi in vegetative characters but is readily distinguished by its floral traits, particularly the adaxial calyx limb, which is wholly dark purple and muricate with coarse, fleshy, conical outgrowths. The new species is restricted to a very small geographic range. Field surveys indicate that it is extremely rare, with very small extant populations, and is potentially threatened by ethnobotanical harvesting. Accordingly, it is preliminarily assessed as Critically Endangered (CR C2a(i), D) under the IUCN Red List criteria.

Aristolochia zhuhaiensis, a self-supporting new species of Aristolochiaceae from Guangdong, China and notes on Aristolochia thwaitesii

PhytoKeys 254: 61-76

DOI: 10.3897/phytokeys.254.139616

Authors: Yi-Fan Wang, Zi-Rui Guo, Sven Landrein, Joyce G. Onyenedum, Shuai Liao

Abstract: A self-supporting new species of Aristolochiaceae, Aristolochia zhuhaiensis Y.Fan Wang & Z.R.Guo, is described and illustrated from Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China. Morphologically, this species exhibits vegetative characters, including leaf blade shape and growth form, that are similar to Aristolochia thwaitesii Hook., the only other known taxon in Aristolochia subg. Siphisia in Asia that is non-twining and self-supporting, native to southern Guangdong, particularly the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. However, A. zhuhaiensis can be readily distinguished from A. thwaitesii by its unique floral morphology. The new species features a campanulate to funnel-shaped calyx limb densely covered with porcelain-white granular pustules. In contrast, A. thwaitesii has an elongated, concave tubular calyx limb with an adaxial surface that transitions from purple to pale yellow or white towards the apex, densely covered with recurved fleshy prickles. Aristolochia zhuhaiensis is endemic to Zhuhai City and has not been observed elsewhere. Detailed illustrations, photographic plates, a distribution map, a digitized holotype voucher specimen, a comparative table, and an identification key are provided to facilitate the differentiation of A. zhuhaiensis from A. thwaitesii.

Morphological comparison between the new plant and closest species is provided. In addition, combinations of two recently described Aristolochia species are made, namely Isotrema vuquangense (T.V.Do) Luu, Q.B.Nguyen & H.C.Nguyen and Isotrema yachangense (B.G.Huang, Yan Liu & Y.S.Huang) Luu, Q.B.Nguyen & H.C.Nguyen.

According to Ma’s (1989a) classification, both new species belong to Aristolochia subgenus Siphisia on the basis of the 3-lobed gynostemium and oblong anthers that are adnate in pairs, opposite the gynostemium lobes. Meanwhile, the two new species are assessed as Vulnerable (VU D2) according to IUCN Red List criteria.

Abstract: Isotrema sanyaense R.T.Li, X.X.Zhu & Z.W.Wang, sp. nov., a new species from Hainan island, China, is described and illustrated here. It is morphologically most similar to I. ledongense (Han Xu, Y.D.Li & H.J.Yang) X.X.Zhu, S.Liao & J.S.Ma and I. jianfenglingense (Han Xu, Y.D.Li & H.Q.Chen) X.X.Zhu, S.Liao & J.S.Ma in the shape of leaf, flower, and the yellow to brown villous indumentum of the pedicel, ovary and calyx. However, I. sanyaense can be easily distinguished from the latter two species by its 1–5-flowered cymes, in hanging clusters of 1 to numerous branches, upper calyx tube obviously longer than basal calyx tube, calyx limb discoid, yellow inside, with purple-red stripes and spots, about 13–18 mm in diameter, glabrous, and a throat dark red without spots, 4–6 mm wide.
