Summary cladogram based on maximum parsimony analyses of 29 morphological characters of the Pithecellobium clade (one of two trees resulting, the second involves differences in the internal topology of Painteria) from Barneby and Grimes (1996). Five genera were then recognised: Ebenopsis Britton & Rose (3 species), Havardia Small (5), Painteria Britton & Rose (3), Pithecellobium Mart. (19) and Sphinga Barneby & J. W. Grimes (3).
