<p>Based on the mucilaginous colonies’ structure, cell length and width variability details, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Jaag (1933)</xref> delimited 33 species of this genus, including 14 free-living, 13 lichenised and 6 lichen epiphytic species. Subsequently, only seven species were well recognised based on some morphological characters, such as cell shape and size, chloroplasts numbers and mucilage properties (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Ettl and Gärtner 1995</xref>). However, the morphological characters of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Coccomyxa">Coccomyxa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> depend on the culture conditions, for example, salinity influenced the phenotypic plasticity significantly (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Darienko et al. 2015</xref>) and nutrient availability influenced the presence of mucilaginous sheaths (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Malavasi et al. 2016</xref>).
